The number of coronavirus cases in Italy could be 10 times higher than those officially reported, rocketing the total number of infections to over 600,000, Angelo Borelli, head of the country’s Civil Protection Agenc said.
“It is credible to estimate that there are 10 positive cases for every one officially reported,” Borelli told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica in an interview.
Italy is currently the epicenter of the pandemic, with a total of over 69,000 confirmed cases. On Tuesday, over 700 deaths were recorded in the country, following two days of smaller rises. According to Borelli, however, the number of new confirmed infection cases was slowing down for three consecutive days.
Borelli said that the lockdown measures announced by the Italian government two weeks ago start to be noticeable. “In the following hours we will see if the growth curve is really starting to flatten,” he added.
Replying to criticism that much more action could be taken immediately, Borelli supported that “it seems to me that we immediately understood that this epidemic was a serious matter”, adding that “as the Civil Protection protocols say, the intervention must always be proportionate to the risk.”
