Speaking in the European Parliament on Tuesday, Helena Dalli, Commissioner for Equality said that the EU Commission will place advancement of LGBTI rights on top of its agenda, and slammed Poland’s creation of LGBTI – free zones.
“We cannot allow the distribution of LGBTI free zone stickers, or the adoption of anti-LGBTI resolutions and not feel responsible for the next phase where physical attacks that take place, even if they are then carried out by other people,” Dalli said.
On Tuesday, Europe’s International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) published the annual review of the human rights situation and the LGBTI intergroup of the EP held its first meeting, during which, it exchanged views with the Commissioner.
The European Commission’s chief, Ursula von der Leyen, when presenting her vision for Europe, stated that she envisages “living in a society where you can be who you are, live where you like, love who you want.”
To this end, the Maltese Commissioner said that her role is to “ensure that von der Leyen’s vision becomes a reality across the EU,” by giving LGBTI people a voice in shaping the policies that affect them.
