The German government and local authorities have heightening measures in a bid to stem spread of COVID-19 across the country, closing the borders both to foreigners and EU travelers wishing to enter the country.
“Today we are taking a further step to protect the population. We are expanding the restrictions on people traveling into the country to travelers from the European member countries — regardless of whether they travel to Germany via air, rail, water or road,” German Transport Minister Andreas Schauer said on Wednesday.
People working in health care or critical infrastructures, as well as the transfer of goods will be exempted from the prohibition, while commuters or people with an urgent need to travel will need to have evidence with them, that prove the necessity to cross the country’s borders.
Temporary border controls have also been extended in a bid to halt spread of the virus and now apply to air and see travel within Europe, according to a statement issue by Germany’s Interior Ministry.
The internal border controls would apply with an immediate effect to flights arriving in Germany from Italy, Spain, Austria, France, Luxembourg, Denmark and Switzerland, and to maritime transport from Denmark.
