PN Leader Adrian Delia today wrote to the President of the European People’s Party (PPE) Donald Tusk calling for an urgent summit of the EPP to discuss the position of the Hungarian party Fidesz.
According to NE sources Delia fully backs the letter sent to Tusk by the 13 EPP Leaders and calls for an urgent videoconference EPP summit to expedite a decision regarding Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party membership.
Delia stressed that the current situation with the COVID-19 outbreak crisis is a Europe-wide challenge but also an opportunity to reaffirm the values that unite us as members of the EPP, which values are threatened by the open-ended emergency legislation which was approved in Hungary.
The position of the Fidesz party in the family of the European People’s Party is now in a situation where the PPE has to speak with one voice among all the political parties member.
The letter addressed to EPP President Donald Tusk reads:
Dear President Tusk,
I am glad to see that you are in good health. The current situation with the healthcare and economic fallout of the COVID19 crisis represents a challenge for our European Union, but also an opportunity for us to re-affirm the values upon which our EPP family has always relied upon.
I believe that this crisis has shown that those values are now under threat under the guise of open-ended emergency legislation passed in Hungary. The situation regarding Fidesz’s membership of the EPP family has now reached a point where the EPP must speak with one voice across our Parties. Particularly following the letter Prime Minister Orban sent to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, I think the situation merits calling an urgent EPP summit via videoconference for us to decide on the way forward regarding Fidesz.
