Portugal’s President tests positive for Coronavirus

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has tested positive for COVID-19 but has no symptoms, according to a statement by the country’s Presidency issued on Monday. 

Rebelo de Sousa produced a negative antigen test, however, a PCR test conducted later in the day came back positive, the statement further reads, adding that he will take another test and remain in self-isolation in the residential area in Belem, in the west of central Lisbon.

In another announcement issued on Tuesday, the Portuguese Presidency said de Sousa’s new test carried out by Ricardo Jorge Institute was negative and that another test will be conducted. 

The news about Sousa’s infection comes less than two weeks before Portugal’s presidential elections, in which, the incumbent president, 72, is seeking a second term, after taking office in 2016.
