This morning, Wednesday, July 19, 2023, a judge at Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad, capital of the northeastern Razavi Khorasan Province, sentenced to death Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani, a political prisoner whose sympathies are with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, or MEK, Iran’s main opposition group.

Sentenced on the bogus charge of “corruption on Earth,” Vafa’i Thani was taken to an unknown location on July 19, after being informed of his death sentence.

Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani.

Vafa’i Thani, 27, a champion fighter in Mashhad’s boxing clubs, was arrested in March 2019 and has since been forced to endure torture and harsh prison conditions.

The Iranian Resistance calls on the United Nations and the European Union, as well as all human rights organizations and bodies, to take urgent action to prevent the execution of Vafa’i Thani after he has already served a four-year prison term.

Signed,

The Secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran
