EU’s Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell, in his first trip to the Middle East after he assumed his position as High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU, met with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Amman, on Sunday.
The two sides discussed the recent regional developments, following U.S President Donald Trump‘s announcement of the Middle East peace plan and also ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, investment and defence.
“The EU and Jordan share the commitment to a two-state solution and respect for international law,” said the Borrell and Safadi in a joint statement, adding that they seek solutions that can be “accepted by both parties in this long-lasting conflict.”
EU’s top diplomat, who was received by King Abdullah II, highlighted Jordan’s key role in regional stability and in assisting refugees, while the situation in the Gulf region and Iraq, the Iran nuclear deal, and the fight against Da’esh, were also on the table.
