The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has agreed to deploy a Rapid Border Intervention Team (RABIT) at Greece’s sea borders in the Aegean, following a request by the Greek government for a second Frontex rapid intervention, but this time at its external borders.
“Given the quickly developing situation at the Greek external borders with Turkey, my decision is to accept to launch the rapid border intervention requested by Greece,” Fabrice Leggeri, the agency’s Executive Director said in a statement on Monday.
Frontex has already increased surveillance capacity at the Greek borders and is redeploying officers from other operations to provide immediate assistance.
The two sides are currently working on the finalisation of the plan’s details and once it is agreed, Frontex will ask the EU Member States and Schengen Associated Countries to immediately provide border guards and other relevant staff within 5 days and equipment within 10 days.
“Our core mission is to protect the common borders of the European Union in support of Member States. In Greece, we contribute to this goal by supporting the registration of migrants and security screenings, which are also important for returns,” said Leggeri.
From 2021, Frontex will have its own personnel that will be assisting EU member states with border-related issues.
