The Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo apologized to the women who accused him of sexual harassment. In a statement sent to Spanish media, Domingo, who had originally rejected the accusations, accepted full responsibility for the pain he caused to the women.
An investigation by the opera performers’ union in the US, the American Guild of Musical Artists, published the results of an investigation that confirmed that “Domingo had, in fact, engaged in inappropriate activity, ranging from flirtation to sexual advances, in and outside of the workplace”. It added that “many of the witnesses expressed fear of retaliation in the industry as their reason for not coming forward sooner”.
Nearly 30 allegations of sexual harassment have been made against the 79-year-old tenor. “I respect that these women finally felt comfortable enough to speak out, and I want them to know that I am truly sorry for the hurt that I caused them”, Domingo said, adding that he understood that some women were afraid to express how they felt “because of a concern that their careers would be adversely affected”.
The move comes days after the Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of sexual assault. He has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 80 women, and the allegations against him helped ignite the #MeToo movement that inspired women to go public with misconduct allegations against powerful men.
