“Net zero emissions by 2050 for the EU equals surrender,” said Greta Thunberg and 33 more youth climate activists in an open letter sent to the Commission, EU Parliament and member states, on Tuesday.
The environment activists slammed the Commission’s draft climate law proposal, heavily criticising the time framework for the CO2 emissions reduction target.
“We, above all, need them for 2020 and every following month and year to come,” they added.
The activists slammed the “exclusion of the aspect of equity” in the bloc’s long-term budget and the maintenance of “loopholes for disastrous ‘green’ deforestation,” and asked for a “science-based pathway”.
The Parliament’s Green’s group had also objected to the law’s plan for the Commission to review the EU 2030 emissions target by September, two months before a deadline at the UN climate summit in November.
“Delaying discussions until September would crush the EU’s ability to play a leading role in global climate talks,” Greenpeace climate policy adviser Sebastian Mang said, according to Reuters.
