China closes border to foreign travellers as imported cases grow

China reported more than 50 imported cases of the coronavirus on Friday. Hours before, the country announced a ban on foreigners entering the country.
In recent weeks China’s infections have dramatically dropped, while nations around the globe have been struggling to control the rapid spread of the virus.
There were 55 new infections in China Friday, the National Health Commission said, adding that 54 of them were imported cases from overseas. This brings the number of infections brought into China from abroad to 595.
“The suspension is a temporary measure that China is compelled to take in light of the outbreak situation and the practices of other countries. China will stay in close touch with all sides and properly handle personnel exchanges with the rest of the world under the special circumstances”, China’s ministry of foreign affairs said.
“Foreign nationals coming to China for necessary economic, trade, scientific or technological activities or out of emergency humanitarian needs may apply for visas at Chinese embassies or consulates”, it added.
The restriction applies to foreigners holding visas or resident permits, as well as to those holding APEC Business Travel Cards. The ban will not affect those with diplomatic, service, courtesy or C visas.
A total of 81,340 people have been infected in China, and the outbreak has claimed 3,292 lives.
