France's Grand Est region reports 570 nursing home deaths since virus outbreak

During the coronavirus outbreak, 570 people have died in nursing homes in France’s Grand Est region, according to health authorities.
While fatalities in nursing homes across France have spiked in recent days, officials have held back on linking these deaths to the coronavirus due to the age and general health situation of the people who have died.
According to the Grand Est Public Health Authority, as of March 31, 411 nursing homes have been affected by the coronavirus out of 620 in the region, with 570 total deaths.
The Grand Est region is considered to be the epicenter of the country’s coronavirus outbreak. Dozens of patients have already been transferred from the Grand Est to other French regions in a bid to ease the pressure on overwhelmed hospitals in eastern France.
The number of coronavirus-related deaths in France surpassed 4,000, however, that does not include fatalities outside hospitals.
Care homes in the country host nearly 1 million people. Senior representatives of these homes have already warned the French Health Minister that the staff needed 500,000 masks and at least 100,000 deaths could occur if the situation was not brought under control.
