Italian, Spanish and French citizens are in their vast majority supportive of the heavily restrictive measures imposed by their countries to contain the spread of the coronavirus, a new poll shows.
The poll, conducted by Redfield and Wilton Strategies, examined the public opinion in Italy, Spain and France concerning the lockdown measures put in place, bringing drastic changes to the citizens’ lives. The countries are those most-hit by the coronavirus outbreak in Europe.
According to the three polls, each of 1,500 respondents in Italy, Spain and France, citizens appear to overwhelmingly back the lockdowns enforced by their governments, with only 5% of respondents in each country opposing to them.
In particular, 90% of the Italians polled said the are supportive of the strict social distancing measures, with the respective percentage of Spanish accounting for 88% and 86% for French citizens.
As for how longer they would be willing to stay in lockdown, the majority of the respondents from the three countries said they would tolerate such restrictive measures for as long as the government deems necessary, even if this could last for more than two months.
At the same time, the people polled appear to be concerned about the severity of the COVID-19, with around 35% of respondents in the countries saying that in case they contracted the virus they would be very worried over its impact on their health.
In addition, the vast majority of the surveyed people consider coronavirus to be more dangerous than the seasonal flu, which has also led to a large number of fatalities.
Finally, most of the respondents supported that the coronavirus crisis would last for two more months, while what they consider to be the most concerning effect of the virus is its impact on public health, rather on the economy. In fact, only about 3 out of 10 respondents in the three countries reported to be more worried about the impact of the pandemic on the economy.
