Poland’s mobile operator Play Communications announced it is planning to launch a 5G network in the northern city of Gdynia.
“What we are announcing today is definitely the opening of the first 5G city in Poland and when I say 5G city it’s because this is not a test,” Play’s chief executive Jean-Marc Harion said, and added that “the entire city is covered”, even though he said the company was still waiting for authorisation from the Office of Electronic Communication to proceed.
Play added that it planned to build another 800 base stations in 2020, which would bring the total number to 8700 stations.
Other companies in the country also compete to be the first providers of 5G network. Poland’s operator Cyfrowy Polsat announced it was beginning construction of the 5G network as well.
Mobile internet speed on 5G networks is 50 or 100 times faster than 4G networks. However, the United States’ government has been pressuring other countries to boycott China’s major 5G supplier Huawei from providing 5G equipment, saying it enables the Chinese government to spy on other nations. China has denied the allegations.
