The Brazilian Ministry of Health confirmed the country’s first case of COVID-19 (popularly known as coronavirus) during a press conference on Wednesday, February 26.
The patient, a 61-year-old man, was diagnosed with mild symptoms of the virus and is currently hospitalized in a hospital in São Paulo.
It is believed that the man was exposed to the virus during his time in Italy between February 9 and February 21, according to the Brazilian Minister of Health Luiz Henrique Mandetta.
This is the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in South America and the Brazilian authorities have already reported that 20 other patients are under suspicion of also having the virus. However, Mandetta has shown confidence that the country can handle the early signs of the epidemic in the continent.
The Brazilian case comes amid a World Health Organization (WHO) announcement on Wednesday that there are now more new cases of COVID-19 outside of China than inside.
The organization received confirmation of 427 new cases among 37 countries on Tuesday compared to 411 confirmed by Chinese authorities, giving the coronavirus outbreak an increasingly global scope.
