Freedom of religion or belief, children rights and the human rights situation in Myanmar and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will top EU’s resolutions to be presented at the 43rd Human Rights Council session (HRC43).
“Human rights are universal and indivisible”, said Ambassador Walter Stevens, Head of the EU Delegation to the UN in Geneva, adding that “they should be discussed based on facts and not instrumentalised by states.”
The EU has pledged to uphold and promote the UN Human Rights system as priority of its external action throughout 2020, as outlined in the Council conclusions adopted on 17 February. It will also support the participation of civil society actors and human rights defenders in the Council.
The EU will call for the renewal of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur for the situation in Myanmar and in collaboration with the countries of Latin America and Caribbean countries (GRULAC), they will also present a resolution to renew the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Sale and Sexual Exploitation of Children.
The HRC43 that kicked-off on Monday in Geneva and will last until 20 March, comprises 47 elected member states from all regions across the world.
